Capital Run African capitals quiz

Why capitals?

Because they're the fastest way to find out how well you actually know the continent. Anyone can name a dozen African countries; far fewer can put the right city next to each one.

Capital Run is a ten-question quiz on the capitals of Africa. Each round draws ten countries at random from a bank of 54 — all five regions of the continent — and offers four capitals per question, one of them right. You answer, you see the verdict straight away, and the correct capital is shown whether you got it or not.

There's no timer and no penalty for thinking. A slow, careful round scores exactly the same as a fast one, which means the score measures what you know rather than how quickly you can click. Once you've picked an answer you can't change it — that's the only rule that keeps the score honest.

Make an account and your best round of ten is kept against your name. Play as often as you like; only the high-water mark goes on the board, so a bad round costs you nothing. The leaderboard shows the ten best players, one line each. Guests can play every round they want — the score just isn't saved.

Where the questions come from

The bank is a plain list of 54 countries and their capitals, grouped by region: North, West, East, Central and Southern Africa. Where a country has more than one capital, the bank uses the seat of government — Pretoria for South Africa, for instance — so there's one defensible answer per question rather than a trick.

The bank is fixed, so it's learnable. Play enough rounds and you'll start recognising the ones that catch you out; that's the point. If a capital in the bank looks wrong to you, tell the site owner and it gets corrected for everyone.
